As seen on the Golf Channel Discussion Board
"Played with the SMT 303 mb's this weekend.
First, these are absolutely gorgeous irons. They have a nice thin sole and top-line like I prefer and the backs remind me a little of the old RAM mbs. But, it's the CNC milled face that really sets these clubs apart and I believe this milled face also is what makes them play so well.
Dave made them with TX-90 stiff shafts and they are rock solid. As usual he did an immaculate build on these clubs....zero blemishes from sole to grip butt.
I used to play TA-1 gunmetals and usually played a draw with those irons, so I was used to aiming slightly right of target. After missing several greens on the front to the right I realized that these SMT's just want to go straight. So I made a few small adjustments in aim and ball position and they begin to dial in.
They hit the ball higher and just as long as the Clevelands. I hope to get to a range this week and see how they work the ball trying to hit intentional draws and fades.
You will not be sorry you ordered these clubs.....play well."

I just completed a session at the range and something has to be woefully
wrong with my new irons. I've been playing a deep cavity back model for
years (Cleveland TA-5, same length/loft/lie specs, but action-lite R shafts) and practically every ball I hit with the new blades flew perfectly
straight; even despite the fact that I haven't touched a golf club in several weeks. My ball flight has a slight draw to it and the shots shaped up wonderfully. What's the deal? I thought blades were supposed to be
impossible to hit, save for the PGA Pro? While my swing isn't terrible, I
certainly wouldn't consider it dead-on repeatable. I'm probably playing to
a 16 handicap these days ( though I haven't turned in a card in a while ) so
are these blades that forgiving? If so, tell Mike Tait that if he ever sells shares of SMT, I'm buying all I can afford. Distance-wise, I've probably gained 3/4 - 1 full club in length. But, I'm not a power player so that is just an extra "benefit". I used to carry my 6-iron 155-160 yds, now my 7iron will make it from 158-164, with a nice trajectory.

In any case, I am more than thrilled with my purchase and plan to tell the
world. I look forward to many happy rounds with them. Thanks again for all
your help with this. I still lurk on the Golf Channel DB and may eventually
inform the masses of my satisfaction. But I'm not sure I want to deal with
all the grief that the "blades vs cav backs" crowds seem to impart on those
who bring up the topic. If you ever have a potential customer who is on the
fence about these irons, feel free to share my opinion with them. I'd be
happy to serve as a referral source.

I wanted to give public props to Dave Schimandle of Slickstix for an impeccable job done in setting me up with new SMT irons. I've cooperated (colluded?) with Dave once previously for a driver (SMT Nemesis offset 10.5 w/ Graffaloy blue 65s). Several months ago, I had called him and swapped emails with him regarding the probability of purchasing some new irons, and the result was a set of SMTs with dynamic gold S300 shafts set up at +1/2 inch and 2º upright.

We decided on a mixed set of cavity-muscle backs for 3i - 6i, and muscle backs for 7i - PW. His suggestions to solutions for some of my old man hacker's swing issues were cussed and discussed, and, for the most part, we went with his recommendations. The results are phenomenal!

I've worked a little at the range for several days to get used to clubs that are actually fitted to me (as opposed to off-the-rack clubs I've played for 5 years), and I was able to take them to the course yesterday for a quick 18. My current index is 16.7, and my 18 hole score was a 79! I've broken 80 several times before now, but those experiences were never as easy as this one. Previous scores into the 70's always seemed to be a real grind trying to NOT screw up a great tee shot or NOT to 3-putt a solid approach shot. Yesterday was a dream come true!

The biggest difference, for me, is the steadily increasing confidence in delivering the shot necessary to get on the green from 150 yards and in. Knowing and feeling where the club head is in the swing, knowing the exact setting of the club face just prior to impact -- these are huge advantages IMO. The more critical the shot, the more confidence I felt in the ability to deliver it and get up-and-in for par or birdie!

The SMT irons have changed my "normal" ball flight characteristics from a push-fade to a baby draw (or straight). With very little change in trajectory (I've always hit a high ball), I've picked up any where from 1/2 to 1 full club in shot distance.

Example:

Old clubs 8i was about 135 yards. New clubs 8i is about 140 - 143 yards.

Old clubs 5i was around 180 - 185 yards. New clubs 5i is about 188 - 192 yards.

In addition, my old divot pattern was very toe deep and showed evidence of an OTT swing path. Because the new clubs are fitted to me, the divot is dollar bill size, shallow, and straight or ever-so-slightly R to L. The quality of the clubs and Dave's work on them have actually helped me to correct some swing issues that have eluded me from day 1. I can now begin to shape a shot to get at some tucked pins that were anathema for me to even consider.

Now I can learn and develop strategies for advantage on a course instead of merely avoiding disasters!

Dave's meticulous attention to detail -- both in tweaking the clubs for my swing and in the patience with me during the discussion phase -- is evidence that true craftsmanship and golf club artistry are alive and well.

Edit: It should be noted that the clubs and the work were done with a price tag that didn't destroy my budget. I'm a school teacher, so I don't have $1000 to throw around for a new set of clubs. Dave helped me to get the right club for me, fitted it to my golf swing, and did it within my tight wad finances. He's a pretty amazing guy, don't you think?

Well done, Dave! ........and Thank You!

Hi Dave,

I received the package this morning. That was fast! I won't get a chance to
try the clubs until this weekend, but here are a few initial impressions:

The clubs are beautiful; props to SMT! The MB's have a spectacular look, and
all the clubs look very good at setup. The offset is fine, imperceptible
except on the long irons.

I'm no expert, but it looks like you did an awesome job putting them
together; no blemishes on the clubs.
